“The worst situation I ever had to face was dealing with a sexually abused child.” Is this person a social worker, or a psychologist? No! This person is a teacher. Most people do not know that being a teacher also means being a part of your students’ lives. In Elementary, students are going through social and emotional changes. Mrs. Reeser is one of the many elementary school teachers that had to deal with the personal lives of her students. “I had to deal with students being bullied, students with divorced parents, umm… and students with deceased parents.” I once met a child that is in elementary whose parents fought around her all the time. I’m talking about abusive fights. The young girl cried to me and told me that the cops arrested her mother because her father pushed her younger brother in front of a car to blame it on the mother and have her arrested. The children were taken away from the parents and given to their grandparents. Because of the young girl’s personal issues, she was not doing well in school. When I spoke to the young girl, she told me that she did not like her teacher. If the teacher tried to understand the young girl’s difficult situation, the young girl would have liked her teacher, and would have wanted to improve in school.

Segment: Bad Habits Gone Good Minutes: 1 min 30 sec
Another issue that teachers have to deal with is the bad habits of their students. Some students may not be used to behaving at home. Thus, their behavior in school reflects their behavior at home. Regardless to the student’s personal habits, it is the teacher’s responsibility to keep them under control. Other students may have a habit of not reading at home. “The subject that most of my students have trouble with is reading. Most of the students don’t practice reading at home.” Though the students may not read at home, it is the teacher’s responsibility to teach the students how to read at the level required by the end of the school year. One way to deal with some of the bad habits of your students is by teaching in such a way that will increase the inquiry of the students. If some of your students do not read at home, help them find a book of their interest.
When you notice that your students learn better through hands on activities do more of them. Students don’t enjoy writing! “The projects that my students like least are projects like biographies, in which a lot of writing is included.” Though you should include more hands on activities, writing is still required. So, “what do you do?” Well teachers could do the writing assignment on a topic that will interest their students. Maybe you can have the students write about things like their favorite toy, computer games, their favorite television show, and etc.

A teacher must also praise her students. When a student does a good job on their work, complement them on it! If you recognize that one of your students that would usually give you a hard time is staying on task, tell them that you are proud of them for staying on task. Whenever you point out one bad thing that a child has done, make sure to point out ten good things the child has done. If a child pushes another student, the student should be told of his wrong action, and should then be disciplined. Notice that I said disciplined, and not punished. To discipline a child is more like putting them in time out, or not allowing them to do something because of a certain wrong action that they have taken. To punish a child is more like abuse. Swearing, hitting, and screaming at a child are some examples of punishment. Once the child is disciplined, a teacher should recognize at least ten right actions that the child has taken, and complement them for each one of those actions.
